Archvale
As happens most of the time, I saw some gameplay on Youtube, and it’s on Game Pass, so here we are.
This was a good one! It’s an indie ARPG. Presentation is top-down Zelda-ish, but with twin stick aiming and room-to-room combat reminiscent of Gungeon (dodging, aiming, moderate bullet-hell). Biomes are pretty diverse, there’s 8 dungeons, maybe 11 or 12 biomes (some just have a miniboss), each with unique tilesets, enemies and crafting mats. Weaponry is pretty diverse, multiple types of melee, ranged and magic weapons. Everything’s just different enough to feel unique enough.
Difficulty wise, “Normal” was fine. They have an interesting approach to world design: the map is shuffled at game start, and the game world is pretty open. There’s no real “hub”, you can do the first half and second half of the game in nearly whatever order you want. Enemy scaling seems fixed, so it’s just up to you to figure out what is or isn’t a good route to take. I focused on magic because I liked the ramp-up mechanic. I had a rough time mid-game, then hit an absolute wall mid-game, then got over that wall and the game was a breeze through the second half.
It was fun! I liked it! I’m already recommending it!
