Suika Game
This will be a quick one: There isn’t much that really needs to be said about Suika Game. It is the viral genre-defining game of the year: $4 Switch exclusive, you drop fruit in a bucket one at a time, matching fruits combine to the next slightly larger fruit, try to climb the merge-ladder to get a watermelon without overflowing. That’s it. That’s the game. Put fruit in bucket until no more fruit fit.
It’s an exquisite and meticulously designed puzzle game, so simple people have knocked it off within an hour or two of programming, but nearly all of the best puzzle games are very simple yet revolutionary concepts. It’s reminiscent of experimental kusoge like Soft Body Tetris, but it works. The physics engine is infuriating yet somehow perfect. Friction and object weight were probably arbitrarily determined, but the values the game uses are perfectly imperfect, and it’s something clones seem to get wrong most frequently. It is absolutely deserving of the hype, if you even remotely enjoy puzzle games – regardless of if you’re good at them or not! – it is one of the strongest and easiest recommendations of any game I’ve ever reviewed.
Now my one hot take: Are streamers just like… bad? After finally picking up Suika, I built up to a Watermelon in my first game. First hour or so of playing I had some great runs, with a current Personal Best of 2,881. This is not to say I’m amazing at this game, or that Suika is easy by any means (it can be INCREDIBLY difficult, you will spend so much time screaming at two fruit to kiss). It’s just like… idk are streamers just not good? I don’t know! Doesn’t matter though, because this game is amazing and will never leave my Switch.
